چکیده

Relative hand preferences as indicated by questionnaire were compared with asymmetries in manual proficiency at three levels of task difficulty (N equal to 63 adults). Correlations between odd/even trial relative hand proficiency scores were .887 and .879 attesting to their stability. Test-retest (6-wk. interval) reliabilities for relative hand proficiency ranged from .831 to .893. Spearman rbos between the questionnaire responses and relative hand proficiency were .733, .689, and .619. These relatively low relationships, especially at the highest level of task difficulty (r2 = 38%), indicate that hand preference does not reflect relative hand proficiency at moderate to high levels of task difficulty.

Do hand preferences predict stacking skill during infancy?

The cascade theory of handedness suggests that hand preferences develop from a history of cascading and sequentially developing manual asymmetries for a variety of actions. Infants who consistently use their preferred hand for a variety of actions likely would gain proficiency using that preferred hand and, consequently, perform more proficiently on other challenging manual tasks. One such task...

The Relation between Handedness Indices and Reproductive Success in a Non-Industrial Society

The evolution of handedness in human populations has intrigued scientists for decades. However, whether handedness really affects Darwinian fitness is unclear and not yet studied in a non-industrial society where selection pressures on health and handedness are likely to be similar to the situation in which handedness has evolved. We measured both hand preference and asymmetry of hand skill (sp...

Differences between left- and right-handers in approach/avoidance motivation: influence of consistency of handedness measures

Hand preference is often viewed as a troublesome variable in psychological research, with left-handers routinely excluded from studies. Contrary to this, a body of evidence has shown hand preference to be a useful variable when examining human behavior. A recent review argues that the most effective way of using handedness as a variable, is a comparison between individuals who use their dominan...

Further evidence of an association between handedness and neuroanatomical asymmetries in the primary motor cortex of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes).

The neurobiology of handedness is still poorly understood in nonhuman primates. Recently, an association between hand preference and precentral gyrus morphology in chimpanzees was reported. The aim of this study was to further evaluate the association between handedness and asymmetries in the precentral gyrus of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and to evaluate the association between hand preferen...

Dyslexia and hand preference in secondary school students

Research results with regard to handedness and dyslexia have been ambiguous. The present study investigated the relationship between handedness and dyslexia in secondary school students based on genetic (Right-Shift) and hormonaldevelopmental theories of handedness. A total of 135 students (45 dyslexics and 70 ageand sex-matched controls) participated in the study. Handedness was defined accord...
